Optimal placement of generators on a network

Duration : 6 months starting in February, 2018

Context
The training period will take place at the Laboratoire de Mathématiques de l’INSA de Rouen (LMI – A3226 FR CNRS 3335) within the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) project “Fractal grid”. In Fractal grid we study the robustness and adaptability of electrical networks, specifically in LMI, we analyse the theory of networks. Within this, the training period will deal with the optimal placement of generators on a network.

Objectives
In harmonic regime, electrical networks are governed by non-linear equations so called “load-flow” which describe the power flows from one node to another. In some limits, these equations can be reduced to a singular linear system involving the graph Laplacian matrix. Using this, we obtained a quadratic expression for the L2 energy in the lines [ckr17]. We can then optimize the distribution of generators to alleviate the most loaded lines [ckr17,rkc17] . Another direction is to choose which loads to disconnect. We propose to study different IEEE networks using these new ideas. The training period will be mentored by Jean-Guy Caputo and Arnaud Knippel at the Laboratoire de Mathématiques de l’INSA de Rouen.

Profile of the candidate :
Finishing master student in applied mathematics. The candidate should know well optimisation and graph theory and have good computing abilities.
